What programmes are available?
The Road Safe Series caters for all year levels. There are several programmes for primary and intermediate schools. They are:
Stepping Out (Years 0–3)
Children of this age need help to keep safe on or near the road. They do not have the skills to judge things such as the speed at which traffic is approaching. Stepping Out will help them behave in a safe way as pedestrians or passengers. The material is divided into two teaching guides, one for Years 0-1 and the other for Years 2-3.
Riding By (Years 4–6)
Children in this age group are becoming more mobile and independent, which puts them at more risk on the road. Riding By will help them develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to keep themselves safe as pedestrians, cyclists and passengers.
Out and About (Years 7–8)
By this age, many children are taking greater responsibility for getting themselves around – on foot, cycle or public transport. They often travel further from home than they did when they were younger. Out and About will help them become safe road users who are aware of their place in the traffic environment.
About ATVs (Years 3-8)
Many children are killed or injured each year while riding All Terrain Vehicles. About ATVs has been developed to help make children and their parents aware of the manufacturers’ warning that ATVs should not be ridden by anyone under the age of 16.
Tracks are for Trains (Years 3-8)
This is an educational programme developed to help prevent children from being killed or injured on or near trains or railway tracks.
Helping Hands
Helping Hands is a resource for parents and caregivers that includes information about how and when to teach children road safety skills. Read a copy of Helping Hands (PDF, 376 KB) on the Police website.
There are also Road Safe Series programmes available for use in secondary schools.
