Getting parents on board
Road safety education is most successful if it is done in partnership with parents and caregivers. They are the best people to train their children in passenger, pedestrian and cycle safety.
That means encouraging them to model safe behaviour themselves, as well as teaching their children how to stay safe on and near the road.
Schools can help remind parents of their responsibilities in a number of ways. Start from the moment that children first enrol by including brochures such as Being Roadsmart for School in your enrolment pack.
You can also include regular road-safety updates in the school newsletter. Homework activities that involve parent-child interaction are another way of reinforcing road safe practices.
