Why teach it?
Effective teaching
How to teach it
For road safety education to be effective teachers need to decide on learning outcomes and topics that are best suited for the developmental needs of their students.
Children aged 5 to 7, for example, have under-developed eyesight and hearing which can make it hard for them to cope with traffic. Those aged 11 to 13 are more physically able, but may be starting to develop risk-taking behaviour.
Road safety education involves learning in three key areas:
- how to be a safe and responsible passenger
- how to be a safe and responsible pedestrian
- how to be a safe and responsible rider
The road safety education matrices in the RoadSense Handbook for Teachers provide learning outcomes for all three modes of transport across four developmental levels.
Assessment is also an important part of the strategy. Teachers need to use formative assessment techniques to support and improve student learning. One way of doing this is to use specific learning outcomes and success indicators.
